The Powell Foundation places priority on organizations and programs that serve residents in Harris, Travis and Walker counties, principally in the fields of education, the arts, health and conservation. The Foundation is incorporated in Texas and is governed by a board of eight directors and operated by a small staff located in central Houston.
The foundation has awarded over $12.5 million in grants to charitable organizations since 1968. As of the end of the year 2009, the market value of the assets of the foundation was approximately $19 million. During the year 2009, the foundation made 80 grants totaling $860,019 to organizations working in five program areas: education, which received 53% of grant dollars; the arts, which received 15% of grant dollars; health, which received 11% of grant dollars; conservation, which received 11% of grant dollars; and other program areas, which received 10% of grant dollars.
