History
The Powell Foundation was created in 1967 by Ben H. Powell, Jr. and Kitty King Powell. Mr. Powell, who died in 1989, was a Houston-based businessman, attorney and investor. He was for 25 years an executive with Brown & Root, an international construction company headquartered in Houston, serving that company as Director, Executive Vice President and General Counsel until his retirement in 1980. Kitty King Powell serves as the Foundation’s founding director.
Mission
The
purpose of the Powell Foundation is to distribute funds for public charitable
purposes, principally for the support, encouragement and assistance to education,
health, conservation, and the arts with a direct impact within the Foundation’s
geographic zone of interest; i.e., Harris, Travis, & Walker Counties,
Texas.
Values
To give further aid to Directors of The Foundation and to assist those requesting funds, the Directors have agreed to consideration of the following values in their evaluation and analysis:
- Integrity - Due consideration to conflicts of interest, personal bias; honesty, no masks.
- Respect for the individual – No dictators or exclusivity.
- Big Picture Thinking – Attention to collaboration, strategic planning, systems change, and reconcilement of differences.
- Effective Program and Group Process – Attention to and consideration of varied points of view on impact.
- Leadership Building – Intergenerational training and consensus building for the present and the future.
