The Powell Foundation places priority on organizations and programs that serve residents in Harris, Travis and Walker counties, principally in the fields of education, the arts, health and conservation. The Foundation is incorporated in Texas and is governed by a board of eight directors and operated by a small staff located in central Houston.
The foundation has awarded over $11.7million in grants to charitable organizations since 1968. As of the end of the year 2008, the market value of the assets of the foundation was in excess of $20,000,000. During the year 2008, the foundation made 96 grants totaling $1,007,315 to organizations working in five program areas: education, which received 50% of grant dollars; the arts, which received 12% of grant dollars; health, which received 11% of grant dollars; conservation, which received 18% of grant dollars; and other program areas, which received 9% of grant dollars.
