The Powell Foundation places priority on organizations and programs that serve residents in Harris, Travis and Walker counties, principally in the fields of public education, the arts, health and conservation. The Foundation is incorporated in Texas and is governed by a board of eight directors and operated by a small staff located in central Houston.
The foundation has awarded over $10.5 million in grants to charitable organizations since 1968. As of the end of the year 2007, the market value of the assets of the foundation was approximately $25 million. During the year 2007, the foundation made 89 grants totaling $882,500 to organizations working in five program areas: education, which received 51% of grant dollars; the arts, which received 14% of grant dollars; health, which received 12% of grant dollars; conservation, which received 11% of grant dollars; and other program areas, which received 12% of grant dollars.
